The Self and Custom Build event at Hethel Innovation Centre, Norwich. see more

Self Build Showcase at Hethel Innovation Centre, Norwich on Thursday 5 May (11am-7pm). The event will provide prospective self-builders with information and guidance to support them on their custom build journey. Spotlighting a variety of informative speakers, including the keynote speaker Richard Bacon MP, Local Planners, Build System Suppliers, Architects and Financiers. The event will host an exhibition of suppliers and organisations as well as a 1:1 advice centre, providing self and custom builders with the opportunity to gain advice, source supplies and get answers to their questions all under one roof.

Passivhaus Trust

The Trust helps organise open days when you can visit Passivhauses. They tend to happen in November. Check their web site

‘Openning doors to low energy refurbishment’ – Superhomes lists well over a hundred houses which have occasional open days.

This has become a major venue to see some of the best in green building products and services (and also one or two dinosaur companies pretending they have something green to offer). Also there are many good free seminars on a wide range of green build subjects. It is interesting to note however that there is increasing concern from the likes of the Green Building Forum about the real ‘green-ness’ of such events.

The Self Build and design show at various venues

Green Build Expo in Manchester. Not particularly ‘self build’ but some interesting seminars and products for the self builder.


The National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon is a permanent exhibition centre and runs a number of shows, workshops and self build courses throughout the year.

The Homebuilding and Renovating Show – Regular regional exhibitions for self-build, renovation, conversion and home improvement.

All Energy – the renewable energy show in Aberdeen.

Fintry Renewable Energy Show (FRESh ’09) was a two day show of how the village of Fintry, near Stirling has invested in a wind generator at a nearby wind farm and is using the income to make the village more sustainable.

Timber Expo  Really a trade exhibition for the timber industry but useful if you are thinking of a timber build

The Ecos Trust, based in Langport, Somerset, regularly run exhibitions and green build events

Eco Open Houses. This open house event is specific to Brighton and Hove

Eco-Showcase at half a dozen venues

Bristol Green Doors

Bristol Green Doors is a chance to see what green improvements people in the Bristol Area have made to their homes


EBUK (Earth Building UK) is the national charity promoting earth building and they are running Clayfest.

The National Network for low-carbon open homes

Open Eco Homes in the Cambridge area


Further afield is Almere near Amsterdam where a whole area of the new town is available to self builders to pretty much do what they want. Worth a visit to free up your thinking.
